FISHTIME
Documentation
Since the earliest times man has become aware of a cyclic
pattern associated with his success in hunting and fishing.
Over the years he has observed a relationship between feeding
patterns of fish and game and the phases and position of the
moon. This is not to say that there are not many other factors
such as temperature, barometric pressure and others but all
serious hunters and fisherman will agree that this lunar
relationship is real and important. It is for this reason that
a number of publications print probability graphs or Over/Under
tables to help you determine the most productive hunting and
fishing times.
This program, FISHTIME-USA was written to evaluate not only the
phases of the moon but also its position in the sky as well as
its lunar monthly travels in the north/south direction as it
orbits the earth.. It allows you to do this for any date you
choose for any location in the continental United States. In
addition to the lunar effects, it also includes the effects
involving the time of day such as dawn and twilight.
Operation of the program requires virtually no instruction
beyond the screen menus and prompts. Detailed discussion of
some of the program features are presented in this
documentation.
C & E Associates has chosen to use the Shareware concept to dis-
tribute this program. This is good for us in that it contains
many of the costs associated with a retail sales effort. It is
good for you since it allows you to make an intelligent buying
decision by trying the program to make sure it does what you
want before you spend your money. It does however bring with it
a legal and moral commitment to buy (Register) the program after
you have tried it and found it to be to your liking. The authors
of Shareware receive NO money from the distribution of their
efforts until you, the user, register it. If you believe the
effort that goes into writing a program such as this deserves
the fifteen dollar registration fee then please register by
sending your check along with the form included at the end of
the documentation.
No program features have been "held back" until you register the
program. When you register, you will receive a copy of the lat-
est version of the program as well as discounts on any future
program upgrades. In addition, you will be kept informed about
several other programs in development on related subjects. Prog-
gram support will be provided to both non-registered and regist-
ered users using Compuserve Mail addressed to Edward J. Panner,
(72717,1612) or by U.S.Mail addressed to C & E Associates at the
registration address.
This program is produced by a member of the Association of
Shareware professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the
shareware principal works for you. If you are unable to resolve
a shareware related problem with a ASP member by contacting the
member directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can
help you resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP member, but
does not provide technical support for members' products.
Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon,
MI 49442 or send a Compuserve message via Compuserve Mail to ASP
Ombudsman 70007,3536.
Additional information about the legalities of Shareware may be
found in the appendix to this documentation.
Location Data: In order to accurately predict probability, the
program needs to know your geographic position. The more
accurately you can enter this data, the more accurate the
results will be. Latitude in the continental United States is a
positive number and should be entered as a decimal value. For
example, 32 degrees and 30 minutes should be entered as 32.5
degrees. If possible, enter the value to the nearest 0.5
degrees. Longitude in the Continental United States is always a
negative value and should be entered as such but will be
converted if you forget. Again, it would be desirable to enter
it to the nearest 0.5 degrees.
Entering your location data is very simple. Choose "LOCATION"
from the menu and then choose "NEW" from the pull-down menu.
Simply enter the name of the location, the Latitude, Longitude
and then answer YES or NO to the daylight savings time query.
If you answer yes, the results will be given in daylight savings
time from the end of April to the end of October and will be so
labelled on the graph display.
If you want to edit the existing location data, choose "EDIT"
from the pull-down menu and you will be able to edit the current
data. Press <END> when finished to write the file.
Latitude and Longitude data is not always readily available so a
list of major cities has been made available to let you
approximate your geographic position. While the results may not
be as precise as if you had entered your exact location, it may
well be close enough for your purposes. To enter the data for
one of these cities, select the "CITY FILE" option from the menu
choices, select a city near you and enter its listing number.
The location data for that city is automatically entered and
will be used until you change it.
Time Zones: The program calculates probability for the
coordinates you enter but presents the time in one of the
several time zones and includes daylight savings time
automatically if you indicate that it is observed at your
location. Since Time Zones do not change at exact lines of
Longitude, the program can only estimate what time zone you
would be in if the zones were exactly defined instead meandering
about in an approximate North/South direction.
At any rate the time zone calculated by the program is shown on
the graphical display and should be exactly right for most
places and may have to be adjusted by an hour for others. The
moon cares little for our time zones and predictions are based
only on the coordinates you enter.
A Single Date Run: To run the program for a single date, choose
"ONE DAY" from the menu. You will be asked to enter the date.
The date should be entered in the MO/DY/YR format. It will be
checked for validity and you are returned to the menu in the
proper block to start execution. If you have entered the wrong
date, you can switch back to the Date Entry Block; Otherwise,
you may choose the Graphic or Prime Time run. The graph is
displayed and will remain on the screen until you press any key
at which time you will be returned to the menu. Pressing the
ESC key will return you to the menu from virtually anywhere in
the program.
Running a Block of Days: You may wish to display a block of
days in sequence without entering dates for each one. Choose
"BLOCK" from the menu. You will be asked to enter the Start
date. After you do this you will be asked for the End date.
The program will display the requested dates in sequence simply
by pressing any key after each one is com pleted. If you wish
to stop before completing the series, simply press the ESC key
to return to the menu.
Prime Time List: In addition to the graphic display, you may
want to display or print a list of the prime times for any day
or block of days. Choose the "PRIME TIMES" option from the
menu. You may choose to display the results on the screen or
print them on the printer. Screen output may scroll off of the
screen if you request large blocks of days so blocks of 20 days
may be appropriate if you are not printing the list.
Probability graphs may also be directed to the printer by
selecting the Hard Copy option. Graphic output on Dot matrix or
Daisy wheel printers will be fairly slow but proceeds at a
normal pace on laser printers. The program will pause after
each graph if a block of days is being printed thus allowing
paper positioning or aborting the printing by striking the <ESC>
key.
Program Exit: The "EXIT TO DOS is self explanatory but you may
also terminate the program by pressing the CTRL and BREAK keys
at the same time.
General Comments: Make sure that the program, the location data
file and Cities data file are all in the same subdirectory. If
the program is started and cannot find the location data file it
will automatically switch to the routine for creating one. This
might happen for example if the location data file were in a
different subdirectory.
Appendix to FISHTIME Documentation
Shareware
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. The author specifically grants the
right to copy and distribute the software, either to all or to a
specific group.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it. Shareware distribution gives
users a chance to try software before buying it. If you try a
Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to
register.
FISHTIME is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
to the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
friends, but do not give it away altered or as part of another
program. The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide
personal computer users with quality software without high
prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to continue
to develop new products. If you find this program useful and
find that you are using FISHTIME and continue to use it after a
reasonable trial period, you must make a registration payment of
$15.00 to C & E Associates.
The registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
computer at any one time. You must treat this software just like
a book. An example is that this software may be used by any num-
ber of people and may be freely moved from one computer location
to another, so long as there is no possibility of it being used
at one location while it's being used at another. Just as a book
cannot be read by two different persons at the same time.
Anyone distributing FISHTIME for any kind of remuneration must
first contact C & E Associates at the address below for
authorization. This authorization will be automatically granted
to distributors recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its
guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distributors may
begin offering FISHTIME immediately (However C & E Associates
must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept
up-to-date with the latest version.)
